Bournda EEC has hosted an annual World Environment Day (WED) dinner since 1978 and we have had many distinguished Australians as speakers. The dinner is always held on the 5th June and this year that day falls on a Wednesday night. We can proudly claim to be one of the globe’s longest running WED events as it is our 42th consecutive dinner. This year the event will be held at the magnificent Tathra Hotel.

We are proud to announce that our WED speaker for 2019 will be Dr Greg Summerell, who has 24 years’ experience as an environmental scientist / science manager and land manager in federal and state government scientific roles. He currently leads a team of 60+ scientists from across NSW as a director/senior executive for the NSW government. Dr Summerell is a Bega Valley local boy, and grew up on a dairy farm at Verona, where he attended Quaama Public and Bega High schools, later moving to Canberra to undertake Environmental science studies at the University of Canberra and a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Melbourne. Dr Summerell has been based out of Wagga Wagga and Sydney for the last 23 years and has now returned to the valley basing his role out of Merimbula National Parks and Wildlife Service office and head office in Sydney. Dr Summerell’s research teams respond to critical issues requiring scientific knowledge and evidence to inform government operations and/or decision making. Dr Summerell's remit covers conservation biodiversity, cultural heritage, land, fire management and climate variability sciences.

Dr Summerell also managed the Wagga Wagga Research Centre (from 1998 to 2018) which is comprised of multiple state agencies (Riverina Environmental Education Centre plus a Private Nursery) located on a 200 hectare research property. He is a member of the NSW Environmental Trust, Chair for the Bushfire Risk Management Research Hub, member for the NSW Research Scientist committee and committee organiser for the MSSANZ International Congress on Modelling and Simulation (MODSIM).

As Dr Summerell has a wide knowledge in many different areas of science, his presentation will focus on the following topics: Citizen science, Data technology challenges and opportunities, Culture and Science and the science policy interface.
