The Sugarants are an acoustic/electric band from the Far South Coast of New South Wales, playing mostly originals with a diverse range of covers by artists including Talking Heads, The Beatles, Crowded House, David Bowie and Fleetwood Mac.
The Sugarants are Jamie Forbes (vocals, guitar), Dave Hibbert (lead guitar, vocals), Nick Keeling (keyboard, vocals), John McVeity (bass, vocals) and Steve Fitzgerald (drums).
Jamie plays with The Hoops and The Jonathan Richman Experience and has also fronted popular local acts Burning Down The House and Yes Commissioner and toured with Buddy Holly Tribute The Crikets. He also works as an actor and writer.
Dave is a singer-songwriter from the Far South Coast. He currently spends a lot of time in his home studio procrastinating over recording his original songs and mucking around building and experimenting with guitar pedals. Dave loves playing his Telecaster through his handmade amps but is quite happy playing his acoustic to entertain his dogs. Has been known to pretend he can play other instruments as well.
Having toured in bands for the last few decades, Nick has played professional shows all around the world. He has collaborated with Kasey Chambers, Paul Kelly, Ian Moss and Mark Gable (The Choirboys). Nick grew up playing trombone in his home state of Texas and then earned a bachelor of Jazz at ANU studying vocals and piano. He spent the next few years touring with a rock/hip-hop band before taking up bluegrass banjo and forming the ARIA nominated band Mustered Courage in 2010. Now he runs the Merimbula School of Music helping the next generation to fulfill their musical dreams.
Steve was born and raised in east Gippsland. He’s technically most qualified to be some sort of intergalactic plumber/opera singer. He holds a masters degree in Music Performance at the Australian National University. He has performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Basel Festival Orchestra and the Australian Youth Orchestra, with whom he acted as principal percussionist.
But he doesn’t do much of that sort of thing anymore. He plays drums with the Sugarants and with CJ Shaw and with Sam Stevenson and teaches music at Sapphire Coast Anglican College.
John is a local legend who has played with myriad bands, including Roxygen, Kitty Kat and The Band of Thieves and Shadoogie. He runs JMC Productions and is an in-demand sound engineer throughout the region.
